Why no Solar Power?

Just something I've been thinking about since I came back from holiday. Where I went everywhere had solar panels for creating electricity, in a country like Australia where the sun shines virtually 365 days a year why on earth aren't people using solar power?

The only thing I've seen that utilises it is the parking ticket machines!

When oil doesn't cost the government power utilities so much to utilize for electrical generation, why waste millions developing solar power? Or at least I guess thats their reasoning.

Besides its a proven fact that, with today's solar panel technology, to power a country the size of Australia with solar power you would need to cover an area the nearly twice size of Bahrain. Now that would be an eyesore!!
