A casual Plant Tissue Culture Technician is required within the Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities (CTCB) for up to 360 hours over a three month period (up to approximately 30 hours per week).
The position is open to external applicants as well as QUT staff.

DUTY STATEMENT
Purpose of Position
The Plant Tissue Culture Technician will perform plant tissue subculturing of banana plant cultures using aseptic technique.
Organisational Relationships
This position reports to the Senior Research Fellow managing the Banana Tissue Culture and Transformation Team at the Centre for Tropical Crops and Biocommodities. It will be an expectation that the successful appointee will interact positively with other staff members of the Centre as well as liaise with staff from other sections of the University where appropriate.
Duties include:
Performance of a variety of routine and repetitive technical duties related to subculturing of differentiated banana plantlets in aseptic culture
Ensure accurate identity preservation and labelling of cultures
Transfer cultures to plant growth facilities
Ensure accurate records are maintained
Comply with Standard Operating Procedures defined for the above tasks
Observe safe laboratory practices in accordance with QUT occupational health and safety provisions, including ensuring the laboratories are clean and tidy at all times
Be accountable for complying with health and safety policies, procedures, hazard reporting and safe work practices. The successful applicant may be requested to undergo additional training as specified by the Centre:
o general technical training
o workplace health and safety training.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential:
1. Education, training and/or relevant experience equivalent to completion of Year 12 standard of education with relevant experience working in a scientific laboratory environment.
2. Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, work in a safe manner in association with provided instruction and maintain records with a high degree of accuracy.
3. Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position (capability for sustained, fine, manually dexterous work)
4. Well developed interpersonal skills to enable efficient communication with clients, staff and students within a team environment
