Gosh I never thought of myself as a lurker, just someone who wanted information and was happy to browse around and look for it with out interferring. My mother always taught us, if you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all, and sleepless you are right, alot of threads I first began to read were chaos. One recent thread, (which began as a tribute just about ended up a blood bath), was Mister Maktoom's passing (gosh I hope I spelt that correctly), which ended up being just disgusting, when all the poor lad who began it was trying to do, was express his sympathy to the Misters family. Brisbanesoul has been a fountain of information for myself and my family, I am more than happy to say that he is the reason I continue to look through the forums. His answers are always informative, educated, and from what I have read unbiased. His advice has been invaluable to us. So all in all I suppose I am a 'lurker', only a hand full of posts over quite a few months, compared to others, but I will only weigh into something I feel is either relevant to me or I feel I can give some worthwhile contribution too. As the saying goes "slow and steady wins the race" and I am an old lady now :laughing6:
Hi,
I have only been on this forum for a couple of weeks now and I am amazed at how quiet it's gone. As a moderator of a number of forums myself, here are some tips and advice we can use to help it become a thriving and effective one:
1) Give members who post up offensive message a PM warning them of their conduct. If they do it again, give them a temporary ban and if they persist then permanently ban them and delete their posts as well.
2) Install a photo album of some events that are happening in Brisbane. Give the members some idea what people in this town are like, the activities they enjoy. That way they'll know we are real people and not just some anonymous computer hacks.
3) Organise some activities for forum members - whether it's pub crawl (for older members), or a family picnic in the Botanical Gardens, or maybe to go out and see some live bands or a movie. Encourage people to get involved with real life activities as well.
4) Make sure that the staff you elect are good, reliable and reputable types. Make an effort to meet them in person at least twice a month to get the general gist of them. I have seen countless forums on Yahoo! by people who started them on a whim and never gave a brown rat's arse about them afterwards. Thus, they became havens for spammers and people who were genuinely interested in what their groups stood for ended up quitting because they were sick and tired of crap coming into their inbox.
5) You could ask that everyone who signs up for this forum have their own personal website as ID such as a myspace, bebo, or facebook site or even their own generic one so we know they are genuine about this forum and encouraging it to grow. This is what has been done with the Brisbane Photography forum in order to keep out spammers or people who are out to abuse the forum's liberties.
That's about my 2 cents worth.

I dunno, the quiet colours are more peaceful than a jazzy blue pattern like some places!
But welcome, Scottie, keep coming and let's get this as lively as FBD

just popping back in a for a sec.....don't give up on this forum peoples....the name is a good aussie name...all forums go through slumps...i know...
And it's hard to see what people want to read and discuss....we keep asking people what they want to see on the forum..what changes, whats needed to make everything run better and pull in new members...
I look at these places as small suburbs.....starting off empty and people eventually move in..and of course not all are going to be buddy buddy...there are some that just want to rock the boat and press everyone's buttons to stir them up or scare them off....and admin and staff have a full on job to keep thses morons under control or ban them..as i said before in another post...a lot go on behind the scenes of a forum as this that most of you readers/debaters/discussers have no idea about...
The only problem i see with BF.com is the outdated forum program that has little or no extra added scripts like most forums.....
some colour be nice...I go a bit overboard on design..but a coloured pastel shade usually looks neat and soft on the eyes....and resize the width of the forum to 98%..not pxl
If this is privately owned, updates to phpbb should be available free on their server.
Get rid of the ads.
Problem members...not a lot you can do but suspend or ban them...or give them another chance...sometimes it takes some people a little time to work out the forum their on, mellow out and settle down....others just want to cause as much disruption as possible..believe me..it's what they do..and it's these odd ones that can make or break a forum...
The best thing to do is a member cleanout now and then...get rid of unwanted lurkers and dead members..keep the info fresh and updated..
It all comes back to having a good staff team on the board that all work as one well oiled machine..deleting spammers and editing out swearing and crap from posts the instant their made..
Using a warning system of so many points, and their suspended or out the door...
Not that i can talk..i'm the biggest softy on the net...but i like to give certain people 2/3 chances, and/or try to find out why they are the way they are, other than just go banning or deleting them off the forum...everyone has personal problems and some just need an outlet like a forum to get some feedback on their issue...or someone to just lend an ear....
So forums as this are not just text and a program...they can mean a lot to some people that have little in their lives...or for those that need companionship..make friends...or have their say on whats in the news..
hope i haven't rambled on here...but those that started this site went to a bit of trouble to provide a place where people from anywhere can find some info on brissy and places..maybe find a friend or just a casual chat.
just my bit.. don't give up

believe me i know...i've been running forums for a few years....
it's a team effort...

Greetings gangster,
It is not easy to follow-up with every nasty word that is thrown around on this forum. We do try our best but things are getting way to nasty these days.
Closing a thread is a last resort. But for the 2-3 ones I closed today, I had no choice but to because the degree of disrespect and insults being slung were...ummm... extreme!
As far as I know, Lamot moderates the Fight Club. Why that forum needs a moderator in the first place is beyong me since its core purpose is to allow members to flame one another
I know that his posts can be offensive and I understand where you are coming from. He is now away from Brisbane, hence away from the forums. When he comes back, should this continue and should people find him offensive, let me know and I will speak to him.
I would like a three strike system in place.
1) Warning
2) Warning + temporary one week ban
3) Ban
Peace!
Brisbane
Respect to you my friend, you have posted what i think most of us wanted to hear. I can probably speak for the majority on here and say, that your idea of implementation is spot on, and is needed in here.
Thank you

Sleepless,
Thank you for raising this issue and taking aciton.
To be honest i've been passive to this, this forum helped me alot comming to brisbane with information and i tried to do my part on helping new members, but the problem is what you mentioned.
About fight club,
I think it is for the purpose of flaming each other, i thought it would be intellectual flaming or having extremem idea's but not insulting and cursing each other.
Anyway,
Hope we see better forum in the future and...

I agree totally with what has been said, hence why I believe that the "fight Club" section was opened where people could be as abusive to eachother as they liked.
However, this seems to have spilled over into general forums now.
Close the topic and ban the culprits.
